Ho-Chunk Nation Gives Students an Outdoor Lesson

Learning in the classroom can be fun, but it's much more exciting when it's outside according to a dozen first and second students from Mauston Elementary School. Recently, the students took their learning on the road for an outdoor adventure with the Ho-Chunk Nation's Environmental Health and Natural Resources Divisions.

 

Nation Pursues Energy Grant Funding

The Ho-Chunk Nation pursues nearly $400,000 in formula block grants from the U.S. Department of Energy to reduce energy use and fossil fuel emissions while finding improvements in energy efficiency and renewable energy projects.

 

Working to Preserve History

The National Park Service-Historic Preservation Division awarded the Ho-Chunk Nation approximately $59,000 in Historic Preservation Grant Fund money. Funding will be used toward the restoration of the Kingsley Bend Mounds near Wisconsin Dells.

The Ho-Chunk Nation's work to preserve and restore the Kickapoo Valley Reserve has been recognized with a prestigious honor. The Wisconsin Wetlands Organization has recognized the area with a Wetlands Gem award.

Garden beds, created by the Ho-Chunk people more than one-thousand years ago, will now be officially preserved well into the future. The land where the ancient gardens are situated has been donated to the Sauk County Historical Society.
